At Colegio Peruano Británico, in addition to teaching academic knowledge and fostering intellectual curiosity, we aim to build up our pupils' personal skills so that they are capable of developing rounded and robust characters.
A report, recently presented to the British Government, has demonstrated that 'character building' is accomplished by adults whose caring, affectionate stance is combined with the consistent application of firm, fair boundaries.
Parents and teachers who adopt this warm but disciplined approach are more likely to impart the kind of emotional skills that make up the personality of a contented individual and esteemed professional.
In particular, the nurture of three inter-connected skills was highlighted in the report:
- Empathy: the ability to put oneself in other people's shoes and to act in a way that is sensitive to their perspectives.
- Perseverance: the capacity to apply oneself to a task undertaken and stick to the goal of achieving it, in spite of any setbacks.
- Self-regulation: the propensity to control one's impulses and bounce back from disappointing experiences.
The opening line of the School Song announces our pupils' purpose in coming to school:
"We come to school to learn to take our place in life."
Empathetic, perseverant, and self-regulating young people are well adjusted to the demands and opportunities of modern life. In addition, they turn out to be good role models whose example of integrity shows us the way to go.
