The importance of developing critical thinking skills
One of our main goals as educators of students of the 21st century is to help them develop the skills to think critically, to be able to create, analyze, organize, judge or predict.
Through research projects, our teachers become facilitators of learning when they guide your children in finding the right answers and also when they encourage them to ask new questions. They are more motivated to learn and develop a sense of ownership when they formulate their own questions.
Our students also have the chance to develop thinking skills when they do collaborative work, as it is necessary for them to explain their own ideas and evaluate the ideas of others.
What can you do to help in this learning process?
After reading a book to your child, you should avoid making only recall and recognition questions like: "What is the name of the character?" or "Where does the story take place?" Instead, try to formulate higher-level questions. You might ask questions like: "What would you have done if you had been in that situation?", "How would you have ended the story?" or "What is your opinion about...?"
Give him or her the opportunity to enjoy enriching learning experiences by visiting museums, libraries, making trips or going to the theatre. Your child will be able to ask better questions if he or she has some prior knowledge of the concepts being studied. Students learn more effectively when they already know something about a content area and when concepts in that area mean something to them and fit into their particular background or culture.
Writing is another activity you can share with your children. When they write, they learn to organize their thoughts and decide which pieces of information are important and which they will not include.
You can also ask them to evaluate their work; this makes them become more reflective.

Festival de comidas
Durante el Segundo Bimestre los alumnos de Primer Grado organizaron un “Festival de comidas” con mucho entusiasmo como parte de la Unidad de indagación “Los alimentos”.
En cada salón se agruparon para crear juntos un restaurante y formar una empresa.
Ellos mismos eligieron el nombre de su restaurante, elaboraron la carta de comidas así como un cartel, realizando todo de una forma creativa y llamativa.
Al llegar el día del Festival, cada grupo trajo una comida especial para compartir con sus compañeros y degustar sus delicias. Se colocaron sus sombreros de cocineros y recibieron con mucha emoción la visita de sus clientes.
Los alumnos de Primer, Segundo y Tercer Grado, visitaron los aulas para probar todas esas delicias. Así como también, recibieron la visita de diferentes directores, profesores y personal administrativo.
Fue una actividad que los alumnos disfrutaron al máximo y en la que mostraron responsabilidad y dedicación.
Gracias a todos los alumnos por su esfuerzo y dedicación, así como a las madres de familia por apoyar a sus hijos en sus proyectos con tanto cariño y entrega.

La Querencia
During this second term, 1st Grade children visited La Querencia. They were able to broaden their knowledge about the topic they were learning in their unit of inquiry “Food we eat”.
The children saw and learnt about the process of milking a cow, and the products that come from this. They were also able to see other farm animals such as pigs, horses and ducks, and find out about the characteristics these have.
The children really had fun feeding the cows, riding a horse and doing some other activities in La Querencia.

Animals on the Verge of Extinction
One of our Units of Inquiry for the Second Term was “Animals on the verge of extinction”.
This unit was really amazing for the children; they learned to categorize animals according to the group they belong to, to identify their habitats, changes and needs.
Their investigation project was called “Animals in danger”. A world map was displayed on the wall; students identified the continents and brainstormed a list of animals in danger of extinction around the world.
Each pupil chose an animal and the first part of the project consisted of bringing a picture of his/her animal and placing it in the continent where the animal is found. The second part was to complete a research paper with the following information about his/her animal: name, where it lives, habitat, how many are left in the world and why it is in danger of extinction. The last and most interesting part of the project was when they had to come to the map with their paper and read the information to the class.
The pupils used their English vocabulary in their expositions and showed their knowledge of the animals they had researched.

Ciencia divertida en el laboratorio
Los alumnos de Segundo Grado con sus manitos en acción, realizaron un fascinante experimento de cambios de color de los pétalos de una flor, a través de la aplicación de diversas sustancias.
De esta manera, a través de una experiencia vivencial reconocieron los pasos a seguir en la redacción, empleando conectores de secuencia como: Primero, Luego, Después y Finalmente.

Visita a Mundo Granja
Los alumnos de Segundo Grado visitaron “Mundo Granja” , una hermosa granja interactiva donde los pequeños tuvieron la oportunidad de trabajar en el huerto y cuidar a los animales de la granja.
En el huerto aprendieron a preparar la tierra, sembrar pequeñas plantitas, regarlas y luego cosechar otras más grandes para alimentar a los animales de la granja.
Se enternecieron acariciando a las crías desarrollando su respeto y sensibilidad por el medio ambiente.
También tuvieron la oportunidad de preparar pizzas y de participar en el proceso de preparación de papel reciclado, llegando a realizar un proyecto artístico con el mismo.

Ancient Civilizations in the Americas
During the second term, students studied ancient civilizations in the Americas. In Peruvian Studies they explored ancient Peruvian cultures, so in Social Studies we focused on civilizations from other countries. As a class we read about the Mayans, Olmecs, and Aztecs and tried to imagine their way of life.
Students then divided into teams of 4 or 5 to investigate an ancient civilization that they had never even heard of! We studied the Mapuche, Ottawa, Apache, Cherokee, Zapotec, and Toltec clans. Students had the opportunity to use laptops to look for information on the culture, religion, location, language, and contributions of these ancient groups. We took this opportunity to discuss investigating skills, reliable sources, and the importance of using our own words when we write and make presentations. The teams prepared engaging Power Point presentations and shared their findings with the class.
The project allowed students to become experts on an ancient civilization. They cooperated and used their investigative and communicative skills to learn about a group of people and then to relay that information to their classmates.

Creando Cuentos
Durante el segundo bimestre, los alumnos de tercer grado trabajaron haciendo cuentos con diversos personajes. Los niños escogieron un protagonista creando así emocionantes y divertidas historias. Sus trabajos los copiaron en un papelógrafo lo cual les dio la sensación de cuentos gigantes.
Todos trabajaron con mucho entusiasmo y colaboraron con sus grupos. Demostraron una vez más el alto nivel de creatividad e imaginación que posee el grado.
Sus trabajos fueron expuestos a sus compañeros y todos compartimos un lindo momento.

Origen del Imperio Incaico
Los alumnos de Tercer Grado dentro de la Unidad de Investigación “ Conociendo nuestro pasado” realizaron una representación teatral con títeres sobre el Origen del Imperio Incaico.
Los niños fueron muy creativos en la realización de sus diálogos y presentaron títeres y un teatrín elaborados por ellos mismos.

New Adventures
In our first unit, New Adventures, pupils were visited by Maria Guadalupe Lomeli de Spraraggett who told us about the history of exploration and how that affected Perú. Pupils had a lot of questions about different explorers and the things that they discovered. Pupils were excited about the visit of Alfonso Pedro Bustios Flores who shared with us an interesting story about Pizzaro’s life and adventures. We would like to thank all parents who have offered their help throughout the term.

Preparándonos para la Primera Comunión
El 23 de junio tuvimos la suerte de recibir en el colegio al Padre Sebastián, quien vino a pasar una mañana con los niños de Cuarto Grado que se están preparando para la Primera Comunión.
Los alumnos se mostraron muy interesados en aprender más sobre la importancia de la Eucaristía y aprovecharon para realizar preguntas sobre Jesús.
El Padre presentó un material muy valioso y de una manera divertida y didáctica supo motivar a los niños, dejándoles unas ganas enormes de realizar pronto su Primera Comunión.
Muchas gracias a la mamá de María Cecilia Navarrete quien nos ayudó a contactarnos con el Padre.
¡Fue un día maravilloso!

Hands-on activities
In our unit on Energy, students participated in numerous hands-on activities this term. They all took part in an egg drop to help them understand the role of gravitational energy. They also went to the laboratory, where they built elevators and motors to help them see how energy and physics have a practical application to the world we live in.

Visita al Museo de la Imaginación
Debido a que este bimestre los niños de Cuarto Grado realizaron una Unidad de Indagación relacionada a la ciencia, visitaron el Museo de la Imaginación. Allí tuvieron la oportunidad de realizar diversos experimentos comprobando y afianzando lo aprendido.
En todo momento estuvieron interesados por conocer los diferentes ambientes del lugar y demostraron un excelente comportamiento.
Fue una visita provechosa y divertida.

Contaminación
Una de las lineas de indagación era analizar las consecuencias de la Contaminación del agua.
Con la ayuda de la Jefatura del Laboratorio, decidimos hacer un experimento que consistia en:
Colocar dos partes de una misma planta en dos recipientes diferentes, uno de ellos tenía agua limpia y el otro tenía agua contaminada con vinagre, durante una sesión, los alumnos fueron observando y registrando las reacciones, los cambios y las características que iban presentando las planta en cada uno de los recipientes.
Finalmente, llenaron una ficha con las observaciones y conclusiones de este experimento.

La Tierra
A lo largo de este bimestre, los niños trabajaron una muy importante Unidad de Investigación: La evolución, crecimiento y cambios de la tierra.
Dentro de los temas investigados, descubrieron una gran variedad de Desastres Naturales que son originados por la naturaleza. Elaboraron maquetas y afiches con la información de causas, consecuencias y algunos ejemplos.
