The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is central to the IB Diploma philosophy, challenging students to reflect on the nature of education, and to consider how and why we learn.
TOK is underpinned by two questions: ‘what do we know?’ and ‘how do we know?’ By discussing these and other important ideas, our students become increasingly aware of their personal and ideological assumptions. They also develop an appreciation for diverse cultural perspectives.
The component encourages students and teachers to:
- Critically reflect on different ways of learning and areas of knowledge.
- Consider the role and nature of knowledge in their own culture, in the cultures of others, and in the wider world.
- Be aware of themselves as thinkers and get acquainted with the complexity of knowledge.
- Recognise the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected but uncertain world.
